What I have learned from my work is that even with the most complicated problems, you've got to look deep in your data to find every piece evidence that you can, in order to improve your decisions. Medicine has taught me to be very much evidence-based and data-driven in making decisions.

I am Professor in Biostatistics, Research Methods and Epidemiology at Harokopio University in Athens, Greece (HUA). I am also Member of the supreme Scientific Committee on Health, Environment and Emerging Risks / DG Health and Food Safety, of the European Commission (SCHEER, 2016-2026). I am also adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Health, University of Canberra, ACT, Australia (since 2017). I am the Chair of the Bioethics Committee at Harokopio University (2022-2025). During 2016-2019 I was vice Rector of Financial Affairs, Research and Development at Harokopio University and President of the Research Committee (ELKE); previously I served as the Dean of the School of Health Science & Education (2013-2016), Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics (2012) and Director of the School's Graduate Studies (2011-2015). 

I have supervised as Principal Investigator 19 large-scale, epidemiological studies and research funded projects (15,2M total). My research interests include chronic disease epidemiology, medical research methodology, personalized medicine, and risk modeling. I am an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH) and the American College of Epidemiology (FACE).

I have published 4 books (Biostatistics, Medical Research Methodology, Cardiovascular Epidemiology & General Epidemiology), 1,000+ scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals (Scopus ID 7005977027), as well as 50 papers in national journals and Conference proceedings and i have more than 50,000 citations of my work (Scopus h-index of 91). 

I act as an Expert for National and International Organizations (including European Commission, EASME, JRC, etc), as well as reviewer for 70+ international journals, and external evaluator for several faculty positions. I am a Section Board Member and Member of the Prevention Implementation Committee of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (ESC EAPC 2016-2022) and former President of the Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society (2018-2020). I also serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Review of Diabetes Studies and BMC Medical Research Methods journals, and Associate Editor and Editorial Board member in 17 other international journals. 

I have given more than 300 lectures in 17 countries around the world in the field of biostatistics, cardiovascular disease epidemiology and public health. I have actively participated in campaigns against tobacco use and substances, exposure to environmental tobacco smoking, as well as for the promotion of healthy dietary patterns and particularly the Mediterranean diet. 

During 2019-2022, I was vPresident and Member of the Board of Directors of the National Public Health Organization (NPHO). I am also Board Member of the National Nutrition Policy Committee of the Ministry of Health and I have served, and currently serving as Board Member of the Scientific Council of the Hellenic Food Authority (2009-2015, 2022-2025) and as Board Member of the National Council of Public Health (2012-2015).
